Savouring Minnan: Culinary Heritage Festival Ignites Quanzhou's Cultural Heart—— A vibrant weekend of taste, tradition, and shared community spirit
Time: 2023-09-16 10:06

Quanzhou's Jinhua People's Plaza came alive on the evening of 15 September with the launch of the 2023 New Min Cuisine · Quintessential Minnan Food Festival, a celebration of southern Fujian's culinary identity and cultural legacy. With its guiding theme—"Explore the World Heritage City · Savour Minnan Cuisine"—the festival invited residents and tourists alike to experience the living flavours of a city long celebrated for its maritime heritage and food traditions.

This year's edition featured an impressive array of participants:

30 vendors showcasing traditional and speciality Minnan street foods

40 "time-honoured" local brands offering signature snack souvenirs

Four categories of officially recognised intangible cultural heritage (ICH) dishes

15 enterprises presenting contemporary takes on traditional prepared dishes

From steaming bowls of hearty noodles to crispy fried delights, soothing broths, chilled appetisers, and delicate desserts, the food stalls delivered a vibrant range of Minnan culinary experiences. The live cooking zone proved especially popular, inviting festival-goers to witness traditional dishes made fresh on-site.

Complementing the food was a lively soundtrack provided by local bands performing well-loved Chinese pop hits. With plates in hand and music in the air, the crowds embraced the festival's summer-night atmosphere—dancing, humming, and rediscovering the flavours of home.

Digital engagement platforms also contributed to the celebration. Services such as Cloud QuickPass, Ele.me, and Perfect Village launched special promotions during the event, offering discount vouchers that encouraged spending and broadened participation.

For many vendors, the event was more than a commercial opportunity.

"This is my second year here," shared a vendor selling Siguo Soup, a traditional four-ingredient dessert. "Compared to last year, the space is better organised and easier to navigate. More importantly, this festival allows us to share Quanzhou's authentic food culture with a wider audience. It's deeply rewarding."

  Organisers and Support:

The festival was organised under the guidance of the Fujian Provincial Department of Commerce and the Quanzhou Municipal Government. Key collaborators included the Quanzhou Bureau of Commerce, the Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, the Market Supervision Bureau, the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Bureau, and the Cultural Tourism Group. Media support was provided by Quanzhou Broadcasting Station and Quanzhou Evening News. Trade bodies such as the Quanzhou Culinary Association and the Quanzhou Time-Honoured Brands Association also played an essential role in shaping the event.

  Festival Highlights (15–17 September):

For three consecutive evenings, the sunken plaza in front of the Quanzhou Grand Theatre hosted a vibrant line-up of events:

An extensive showcase of Minnan street foods and culinary heritage

Theme nights exploring the fusion of mountain and maritime cuisine

Live music performances enhancing the open-air dining experience

An immersive cultural atmosphere celebrating the Minnan spirit

More than a food fair, the New Min Cuisine · Quintessential Minnan festival reaffirmed Quanzhou's status as a crossroads of culture and cuisine. As the city continues to build its profile as a World Heritage Site and culinary destination, this festival stands out as a delicious example of heritage made fresh—one bite at a time.
