Time: 2018-10-22 12:38

Quanzhou, October 22 – A six-day vocational culinary training program for students from special education schools across the city was held at Quanzhou Special Education School from October 15 to 20. A total of 29 students from 10 different schools participated, accompanied by their teachers.

Organized by the Quanzhou Municipal Education Bureau and the Quanzhou Education Foundation's Special Education Fund, the initiative aimed to equip students with practical cooking skills. The program culminated in a skills showcase on October 20, where participants demonstrated their culinary abilities.

A Comprehensive and Pioneering Training Program

"This training offered a well-rounded curriculum, covering various cooking techniques, including steaming, boiling, stir-frying, and deep-frying,"said Cai Jingcan, Principal of Quanzhou Special Education School."Each student gained hands-on experience, laying a foundation for both daily life and future employment."The program primarily targeted senior students aged 16 and above, who showed strong motivation to learn vocational skills.

As a pioneering initiative in the province, the program set a precedent for integrating vocational education into special education. It aligns with national policies promoting disability-inclusive workforce development and serves as a model for advancing vocational training for students with special needs.

  Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence

For many students, mastering basic culinary tasks—such as identifying ingredients, chopping vegetables, and cooking—was a significant challenge. Of the 29 participants, 18 had intellectual disabilities, while 11 had hearing impairments.

"Due to their special needs, students had to practice each dish repeatedly, with instructors providing meticulous step-by-step guidance. Their enthusiasm was remarkable, and successfully preparing a dish gave them a strong sense of achievement and boosted their confidence,"said Pan, a teacher from Hui'an Special Education School. She hopes similar training programs will continue, enabling students to acquire essential life skills.

One student, an 18-year-old with a hearing impairment, stood out for his exceptional focus and skill. His dream of becoming a chef was evident in his precise knife work and cooking techniques."Interest fuels dedication,"noted the vice principal of Quanzhou Special Education School.

  Inclusive Learning with Tailored Support

To ensure accessibility, the program incorporated various support measures. A teacher meticulously recorded detailed cooking steps in a specially designed notebook, making the instructions more comprehensive than a standard recipe."Seeing the students so engaged, I wanted to contribute in any way I could,"said Pan, who shared her notes with all participants via a training group chat.

Given the potential safety risks, such as handling sharp knives and heavy woks, organizers implemented strict safety measures, including accident insurance for all students. Additionally, sign language interpreters were present throughout the training to ensure that hearing-impaired students fully understood the lessons.

This initiative not only imparted valuable culinary skills but also fostered self-reliance and confidence among students, reinforcing the importance of vocational training in special education.
