Time: 2021-07-25 18:00

On 25 July 2021, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Fuzhou, Fujian, approved the inscription of Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China on the World Heritage List. This designation makes it the 56th World Heritage site in China and the fifth in Fujian Province.

The heritage nomination process for Quanzhou began in 2001, and after two decades of dedication, the dream was realised in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee, originally scheduled for 2020, was postponed to 2021. As China's sole nomination for this session, the Quanzhou site drew significant attention.

The inscription comprises 22 representative historic sites and their associated environments, reflecting Quanzhou's integral role as a maritime hub during the Song and Yuan dynasties. These include administrative ruins, key urban infrastructure, religious sites of diverse communities, commemorative landmarks, roads and waterways, ceramic and iron production bases, and networks of land and sea transportation. Collectively, they illustrate a fully integrated system of production, transportation, and trade for overseas commerce, supported by institutional, social, and cultural frameworks that shaped a vibrant, pluralistic society.

In an era defined by peace, development, cooperation, and shared prosperity, this outstanding example of inclusive, intercultural exchange from China offers the world fresh insights into building a shared future for humanity.

Fujian is now home to five World Heritage sites: Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China,Mount Wuyi, Fujian Tulou, Kulangsu, the Historic International Settlement, and China Danxia (Taining Danxia Landform).
